Day 15: Trees, Leaks and Leeks

Wednesday 1st April 2020

We begun the day outside. Except this time we had company. There were 3 guys giving the big tree next to our house a trim (they claimed haircut but it’s basically a bald stump now) so we couldn’t sit on our usual bench. Luckily they lifted and moved it for us, facing them which was quite showy on their part. They basically scaled the tree as we drunk coffee and wrote our blog. Was a nice day in the sun to begin with.

Alex got an email in the morning saying there had been a leak in the Southwark flat’s kitchen, number 103 had been dripped upon. He got a call from him mum asking him to head back to the flat. He raced through his micro problem set to finish it in time so that he could cycle over and get back before his lectures started. During Alex’s mad rush, Leila prepared him a lunch of leftover curry alongisde bread with Tabasco – knowing him quite well. Alex finished the PS, got on a bike and cycled to the flat. Was super empty on the streets, was actually really enjoyable listening to World Top 40 whilst cycling and jamming. Leila was not happy to hear that he had cycled with headphones on again. He got in and found that the pipe under the sink wasn’t attached anymore, likely the result of over-zealous plunging on the part of his dad. He called his grandma who rushed him through the chat, she’s well but kept trying to finish the conversation. He then listened to the FT podcast and headed back home.

While Alex was out, Leila was on back-to-back Zoom calls, but when Alex arrived, Camden Grocer delivery came and Leila was super happy. We had leeks, peppers and eggs for days. Leila shut-down here call and went straight into re-packing the fridge. At 4pm Leila dialled into the FT-Live podcast discussion on how to use policy to prevent recession feat-Martin Wolf et al. What was interesting was their differing views on how the recession would turn out. They also had super different views on the policy required and role of the central banks. Alex meanwhile ploughed through his various lectures, including an improved macroeconomics and really fun discussion of his Heinlein book.

Leila finished work and had a chat with Anish, we cooked together, Alex cooked and Leila cleaned. Leila really enjoyed this because Alex (apparently) does not clean correctly. We made green-pea pasta with loads of veg, mustard and lemon. We ate food and played a quick game of chess which was paused because it was getting late, Leila killed Alex’s queen when he forgot about it and he needed to do Macro. Alex had a quick zoom call with Matt Harry and Dave H from Cambridge, which was fun and really good to catch up. He then came upstairs and watched 10 minutes of Leila’s Spanish drama before bed.
