Leila made me get up because it was sunny and 20c, Leila was super excited for the sun. She was wearing a summer dress and she made super smooth coffee for us to sit out in the sun with. We reflected on how weekendy the weekend felt while we sat in the sun. Alex had finished off his book in the morning, and was happily distracted by writing emails and finishing admin tasks before joining the boys for D&D at 12. While he sat inside shouting into his computer, Leila made herself a salad and sat outside in the sun.
Leila went for a walk, the canal was really busy, and therefore she looked for a quiet spot to read. However, this wasn’t allowed by the law (Leila is a criminal) and the police were going from person to person asking whether they had a reason to be outside. Leila didn’t beyond wanting to read in the sun, so she came back, downloaded ‘Half of a yellow sun’ on audiobook and then went for a walk, allowed by the law as her ‘one exercise per day’. She walked to Camden and picked up some nice foods from the Korea’s supermarket including the Barley water, chestnuts and kimchi (and a sweet potato).
When Leila came back, Alex was hoovering while still playing his game (it wasn’t his turn), Leila joined her family zoom call which had an agenda (which helped a lot given there are 27 family members on it). They went through old family reunion pictures and videos and each person was assigned to talk about their memories and Leila’s grandma massively engaged (the first time Leila has seen her do this virtually) and she recounted lots of tales about Dar Es Salam.
Alex finished up his game and jumped onto a call with Sam E and Hannah who’re both back in Cambridge. We originally set the call up for 30 minutes but after 1.5 hours of chatting about how they could help people in the MPAID, how their families were doing etc. They decided to turn it into a weekly check-in instead and save the rest of the conversation for next week. Leila cleaned the kitchen, did the laundry and did a barre class. Alex came down and gave Leila a massage because her back was hurting and cooked while Leila showered. Alex cooked veggies and Linda McCartney burgers. We then watched the Queen’s live address to the nation on Coronavirus and the need to stay at home. She made us feel very proud to be British and we both love the Queen. We had a big dinner and chatted about what we would do if we ran the country – something Alex has thought about way more than Leila. Leila is more big government than Alex thought she was, and Alex is more free-market. We disagreed a little about the role of House of Lords and whether there is an advantage to it being hereditary and about the role of inheritance tax as a mechanism to tackle inequality in practice. We then watched a bit of Chicas de Cable (Alex is getting more intrigued by the day) and headed up to bed.
