Day 30: One month together

Leila unintentionally woke Alex up early. She felt bad, but then quickly realized it meant he could be on coffee duty which made her excited. Alex used up the last of the Alchemy beans (RIP) but the coffee was worth it and we both had 2 (this is unusual for Leila but very very normal for Alex). Leila also started panicking about their Oatly supply so bought £33 worth online. Alex laughed which is ironic because he is the primary consumer of Oatly in this household. Alex’s early rising also meant they could write the blog together in the morning on the bench in the sun. Alex used his extra hours to play games and read a case on oil exploitation in Chad. Leila worked continuously until 12pm, at which point she joined another live pilates class with Heartcore (she had to use her free credits up). The teacher’s voice initially annoyed her but she had a great playlist and the class was super hard in a good way. Being able to exercise during the day is definitely one of the best perks of work from home for Leila.

When she finished, Alex was downstairs cooking ravioli with bacon and onion. It smelt and tasted so good and Leila stole 2 pieces of pasta (without bacon) as a snack. Alex then started lectures and was enjoying his Dev one until our WiFi died and both of us got thrown out of our respective Zoom calls multiple times and had to hotspot. After 1 hour of hotspotting, Leila’s phone overheating and no sign of WiFi, she decided to wash her hair and capitalise on the time. Meanwhile, Alex continued working via hotspot but took a break to brush Leila’s hair after she came out of the shower (not quite sure why that happened but it feels like a good skill for Alex to learn). The WiFi came back and Leila went back to work. At around 5pm Dominic Raab announced that the UK would extend lockdown by another 3 weeks. Unlike the first time lockdown was announced, this time Leila and Alex didn’t really need to discuss where they wanted to be, :).

Alex begun cooking during his final lecture which was about Malthusian, and he enjoyed listening to his Indian professor and classmates debating the Indian healthcare system. Leila had finished work by this point and went upstairs to read her book. They then ate dinner which was spicy, marinated tofu rice (with lemon zest) with pad Thai. Leila ate more rice than she usually does because it was so tasty and she preferred the marinade that Alex had made vs. The packet one. After dinner, they clapped for the NHS at 8pm along with the entire street and lots of people in the opposite apartment block. It always makes Leila feel happy and connected to the neighbours, but Alex noticed that some houses seemed to have a lot of people living in them whereas we are super lucky to have a big house for just the 2 of us. Alex searched for something to do in the evening whilst Leila cleaned up his cooking mess (quite extensive but worth it). We landed on watching Bandersnatch on Netflix which is a cool concept but was quite creepy and ended with the lead character chopping up his dad quite graphically (not Leila’s ideal TV watching but Alex liked it and so she was happy).
