The day started as per normal with L & A working downstairs in the kitchen. It was one of the last nice days of sun so they had planned to be outside for at least some of it. The news and social media was focussed on the frustration, anger and sadness of the Black population of America and Instagram was occupied by a social media blackout post. This was affecting not only their friends but as people, it felt like a really important cause that they wanted to know more and show their support for it. Leila spent most of the morning reaching out to her friends were most affected (everyone should be affected) and offered her support and also composed an email to reach wider in Goldman. One of her good school friends wrote an article (below) which made her really think and she shared it as wide as she could. She also tried to chat to a few Ismaili friends to discuss how the community could / should respond, and later tried to chat to her dad about it to bring it to his attention. She didn’t do much work and spent some time looking at where to donate money and how to learn more. Her black work friend called her extremely upset that her manager hadn’t replied to an email she had sent about how she feels right now, and it made Leila angry, upset and a little bit helpless. She went outside for a walk to compose herself.
After a day of minimal work and feeling tense, L spoke to A about it for a bit and then had to head out to see Ruki for a walk in Kings Cross. They sat in Granary Square (Which was heaving) and chatted about racism, Cambridge, boyfriends and lack motivation in work. Meanwhile, Alex chatted to Roukaya and talked about frustration, sadness and happiness at the same time and focus on one thing or many things. On return, Alex made a spelt pasta dish which they ate quite quickly because L joined a call at 9pm with Arabella and Anish to celebrate Arabella’s birthday. It was really nice and she forgot about the day momentarily, before bringing it up on the chat as Anish had not seen much of the stuff going on (deleted social media). Alex chatted to Ali meanwhile and agreed to try and go and see him. Then they headed to bed in the regular bedroom for the first time in a long time.
