Day 126: Olive oil & whitebait

Wednesday

They woke up and packed their bags to check out of Plaza Marchi. They headed to Kruscic bakery and bought some stuff to take home (which L just forgot about and found, 3 days later) and Kava coffee again where the girls recognised them. L tried a new oat milk which was Finnish, it was OK but not as good as Oatly. They weren’t really hungry but planned to go to Ciri Biri Bela for brunch and L was feeling a bit migrainey with double vision. They stopped by Intimissi and L bought a bralette and then headed to the restaurant and decided to have a small brunch. L ordered a very specific juice and they ordered a pastry and asked for half of it to be tofu cream, and the other half cheese with spinach mushrooms and pine nuts. Then they asked to move tables in the courtyard and L felt like she was being very picky and difficult as usual. But they drinks and pastry were yummy and they gobbled it down. Then they decided to go to the beach so A could have a swim. On the way, A took them past the Uge oil bar and they booked a last minute olive oil tasting for later that day. As they left the restaurant, the waiter followed after them and told them the tasting lady couldn’t make that day but instead invited them to sit down and try the oils for free with some bread which was super nice of him. They sat there for 20 mins eating more bread and trying 20 different oils. Then L remembered she had seen people eating whitebait in a restaurant nearby and they found the only restaurant in Croatia that had them, and planned to go back later.

They walked to the beach just 15 mins from the centre of the Old Town which was bustling and had lots of beach bars, but had few people swimming in the deeper ends and loads of people on the busy beach. They set up camp in a bar and L did some admin whilst A went for a swim. Then L decided a swim might help her migraine and she went to go chat to a nice lady at the bar to see if they could leave their stuff in the lockers so they could swim together. They didn’t have lockers but the lady was super nice and allowed them to leave their stuff behind the bar, so A and L both jumped into the water together and had a nice swim together. Then they bought a beer from the nice lady and chilled on the bean bags in the sun. It really didn’t feel like they had a flight in a few hours. They chatted about how they do things the other one enjoys but then enjoy those things themselves (e.g. olive oil tasting, swimming). Although pressed for time, they could not resist going back to the only whitebait place in Split and had a quick meal which A really enjoyed.

They then rushed back to the hotel and had the fastest double hairwash of all time (15min) in a random hotel room, and ran along the promenade with wet hair to jump in a uber to the airport. On the way they listened to Ultra radio and party tunes which they loved. The airport was dead, and only 1 cafe and 1 duty free shop was open. It was super clean. We were really lucky they let us take 5kg extra weight on the plane. L spent ages looking for oils and A spent ages looking at gin and wine. They got on the flight which was 70%^ full and the guy in between them on the row moved so they had 3 seats to themselves. They boys next to them were coughing and looked dead and it was gross..Wizz Air suck. They listened to Educated podcast on Talking Politics with Tara Westover and about Ultra Processed Foods. L was nodding off whilst simultaneously wrote some application and played games. On arrival in Luton, exit was quick and they made it in plenty of time to the train. They watched Friends on the train and arrived safely home and went straight to bed.
