Day 138: 4am presentation and no sleep!

A had a deadline of 1pm to submit his dData presentation, so he had set an alarm of 7am the night before (much to L’s chagrin). He managed to wake up at exactly 6.55, turned off his alarms and headed downstairs. By the time the sleepyhead Leila wandered lethargically downstairs, at 8.30 (several hours earlier than A usually gets up) A was at the screen and already had a coffee in hand. L had slept well but had loads of work to smash through during the day. A worked away at his presentation, putting everything together and drawing out the country prediction pages (Philippines, Pakistan and Myanmar) and was pretty pleased with how much he’d done by 1pm. L fought fires the entire day and tried to make her intern feel welcome, and was trying to find the perfect project to set him on which would be useful and fun to complete. L made both of them lunch, which was brown and delicious – rice and egg. After a little more working, they decided to go out for the first day of eat-out to help out.

They headed to CDY, and initially aimed for Morty and Bob’s but apparently they were only doing 50% off food, so they walked opposite to Dishoom which had 50% off everything (except alcohol) and they got lassi, decaf coffee and some Bhel. L thought it was amazing that they could just walk into Dishoom where you usually have to queue for ever. L had a call with Krystle who she thought needed something super important, but apparently she wanted just a catch up and a gossip.

They came back and L did calls whilst A worked upstairs using the TV as a second screen for coding. L got frustrated by her large query not running and came up to work next to A o the sofa which they did for a while and also wrote some blogs. Then L cooked an easy dinner of broccoli, fish cakes and salad and A took a little break to eat. Then L watched TV and read before doing a preview of A’s presentation with him and telling him to use Excel and dumb it down because he is very ambitious. Also she thought she had a tick bite for one minute before A laughed at her. Then A came and said goodnight before returning downstairs to complete the presentation and send it off just before 1.30am. He had more coffee and tea, and kept himself going until it started at 3am. Meanwhile L was upstairs with a super active brain thinking about nowcasting and farms. A did his presentation to a panel of 8 ADB senior people and it went really well, and they thought it was very ambitious and gave him good ways to move forward. L went to the loo not knowing what time it was and found A chilling on the sofa having finished at 4.30am. He came up to bed and they chatted about the presentation before he fell asleep (understandably) but L could see the light coming in thru the curtains by this point and knew it was not long to go until work, and a crazy day ahead. She was not very happy and felt like this was one of the most challenging things she has ever gone through. She decided to get up and did some work and admin (emails, whatsapp) and spoke to her dad at 530am. Then she fell asleep between 7-8.30am.
